Tasty, crispy onion rings are the perfect side dish to burgers and sausages. They are actually very easy to make as well. You can serve them with all sorts of sauces, although the most common are ketchup or barbecue sauce.

Crispy onion rings

Ingredients

  • 1 medium onion
  • 120 grams of flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda (1 g)
  • Salt to taste
  • 1/4 teaspoon of paprika or chili powder (1 g)
  • 1 egg
  • 2 dl with milk
  • 1/4 teaspoon with black pepper (1 g)
  • 120 grams of breadcrumbs
  • 2.5 dl sunflower oil

Instructions

  • First of all, peel the onion and cut it into rings about 1 cm thick. Spread the rings apart very carefully and set aside the large and medium-sized ones. These are the ones you will use in the recipe. Save them less for another recipe.
  • Next, combine the flour, baking soda, salt, and chili or paprika powder. Stir well and then cover each ring in the mixture, one by one. Gently shake each ring afterwards to get rid of excess flour.
  • Then add milk,  pepper and eggs to the flour mixture. Whisk until well blended and lump-free.
  • Then cover each ring again  with the mixture. Dip and then shake off the excess.
  • Finally, cover them with breadcrumbs  that you have previously sprinkled over a plate.

  • Once the onion rings are done,  fry them in a pan with plenty of hot oil. The secret is to use sunflower oil, which is cheaper than olive oil while tasting milder. In this way, the taste of the onion rings will really shine.
  • Fry four at a time  (depending on the size of your pan). Carefully turn them over and make sure they do not burn.
  • Then, when you see that they have a nice golden color,  take them out of the oil and place them on paper towels so that the excess oil will be absorbed.

Homemade barbecue sauce

Ingredients

  • 1/2 onion
  • 2 garlic cloves
  • 125 ml with chopped tomatoes
  • 1 teaspoon of sugar (5 g)
  • 3 tablespoons of honey (50 g)
  • 3 tablespoons of vinegar (45 ml)
  • 1/2 teaspoon with salt (2 g)
  • 1/2 teaspoon with black pepper (2 g)
  • 2 tablespoons of Coca cola soda (30 ml)
  • 2 tablespoons of lemon juice (30 ml)
  • 3 tablespoons of olive oil (45 ml)

Instructions

  • To begin with, sauté the onion and garlic (which you have previously chopped up) in oil. Then add the tomato, sugar and vinegar.
  • Stir while adding the rest of the ingredients,  little by little. The order in which you add them does not matter.
  • When everything is mixed,  continue to boil to reduce the liquid and make it thicker.
  • As soon as you like the consistency of it, use a blender or hand mixer until the mixture is completely free of lumps.
  • If you want more spices,  add a few drops of tabasco sauce for a special taste. This step is only for those who like strong food, because Tabasco is quite strong.
  • Finally, let the sauce cool  for a few hours in the refrigerator. This will allow the flavor to blend and turn into a wonderful sauce for your onion rings.
